Fine line tattoos leave very little room to hide. A heavy outline can cover a weak drawing; a single fine line can’t. This course is built for people who want their designs to hold up before a machine is ever switched on.

Reading the line

Line weight, line spacing and simplifying reference material into drawings that suit fine line.

02 — STAGE II

Composition & scale

Balancing elements, choosing the right size for the detail, and planning negative space on purpose.

03 — STAGE III

Placement on the body

Fitting a design to the curves and movement of the body so it sits naturally from every angle.

04 — STAGE IV

Stencil preparation

Turning a finished drawing into a clean stencil and checking it before the first line is pulled.

From paper to placement

The course moves the way a fine line piece does: drawing and redrawing on paper, then testing how that design sits on a placement, then preparing the stencil. You’ll get feedback on your own drawings from our trainers, so every change has a reason behind it.

Design connects straight to technique. Once your stencils are clean, the Needle & Technique Training and Tattoo Machine Training courses show you how to carry those lines onto skin.

Design course questions

Do I need to be good at drawing already?

A comfort with pencil and paper helps, but the course is about drawing for fine line specifically: simplifying, spacing and sizing. If you’re completely new to tattooing, the Beginner Fine Line Tattoo Course is a good place to start.

Why does fine line need its own design training?

Fine line has less ink and fewer bold outlines to hold a design together. Scale, spacing and negative space do that work instead, so they need to be planned from the first sketch. Our guide on designing for fine line tattoos gives a taste of this thinking.

Does the course cover stencils?

Yes. Stencil preparation is the last stage of the course, because a clean stencil is where the design and the tattooing meet.

Can I take it alongside another course?
